An eight-fold vessel, its body swelling out of a narrow foot into a ring of rounded lobes before drawing back in towards the mouth. The repetition is the entire design: the profile shifts as you walk past it, and the valleys between the lobes throw their own shadows, so the piece does its decorating through form rather than ornament. As a decorative object it belongs on a mantelpiece, a windowsill, a hall table or a dining table centre, holding dried stems, pampas, seed heads or bare twigs — or standing empty as a small sculpture, which is how a shape this regular tends to look best. Quiet enough not to argue with the rest of a plain room, and part of a wider family of related vessels if you want a group of them rather than one.
