Vase Mode Cauldron

Witches' cauldrons have kept the same profile through five centuries of illustration: a heavy bellied body, a waist that pulls in towards the base, and a rolled rim wide enough to lean a spoon against. Spiralised as a vase-mode design, that outline becomes one continuous wall, a single unbroken ribbon tracing the shape from bottom to lip. It sits somewhere between decoration and container. At Halloween it holds sweets by the front door; the rest of the year it swallows pens on a desk, keeps keys off the hall table, or takes a plant pot lowered inside it. The cauldron is one of those forms that carries its own atmosphere, so it earns a place on a shelf even out of season.
