A deer in profile does a great deal of work for very little fuss. Legs, arched back, raised head and a spread of antlers, and the biscuit is unmistakable from the far end of a table. It is the shape that turns a plain batch of shortbread into Christmas baking, though it earns its keep at woodland-themed birthdays and at Easter too, where rabbits have long since become obligatory. The cutter is drawn for rolled dough, the sort of firm gingerbread or sugar-cookie mix that holds an outline once it is baked. The silhouette is the whole point, and it leaves plenty of room along the back and antlers if you want to pipe icing over the top afterwards. Worth keeping in the drawer year round rather than digging out only in December.
