The mask of a certain armoured superhero, boiled down to the bold angular outline that still reads at biscuit size: flat brow, narrowed eye slots and the tapering jaw of a metal faceplate. It is a shape that survives simplification unusually well, because the character was always drawn as hard planes rather than curves. Cutters like this earn their keep at children's birthday parties, where a tray of themed biscuits does more work than any amount of bunting. The same outline carries over to fondant, sugarpaste and modelling clay, so it stretches beyond the baking tray into cake toppers and craft afternoons. One is enough for a party; a second means a sheet of rolled dough gets worked through faster. It ends up in the drawer with the seasonal shapes and gets asked for again the following year, which is more than most party props manage.
