Description

Anyone who owned the 1994 Pink Floyd album will place this immediately: two enormous heads in profile, set facing each other so closely that the gap between them resolves into a third face staring straight out. Storm Thorgerson's original cover was shot in a Cambridgeshire field using a pair of monumental heads built for the purpose, and the image has been shorthand for the band ever since. Brought down to shelf scale, the trick still works. From the side you have two stern profiles in conversation; step round to the front and the empty space between them does the rest. It is one of the few pieces of album artwork that genuinely functions as an object rather than as a picture of one. It belongs on a mantelpiece, a record shelf or the top of a hi-fi cabinet, and it is a dependable present for the person whose taste in music was settled decades ago.
