Hands as bookends are a long-running motif in interior design — the illusion that a row of paperbacks is being held upright by something living rather than a lump of cast iron. This is the second design in a hands series, which means it approaches the same idea through a different gesture. It belongs on a shelf that already has something to say: a short stack of art books, a run of records, cookbooks propped at the end of a kitchen counter. Bookends are one of the few printed household objects on permanent display that almost never get handled, so they reward a finish you would not risk on something in daily use. Run it once to close a single row, or print it twice if you want both ends of a shelf bracketed. Either way it is a sculptural object doing an ordinary job, which is usually the best sort of home piece.
