Shelf Left

The name is doing honest work. This is the left-hand piece, named as one half of a handed pair rather than a symmetrical unit you can turn round and use either way, which usually means it was drawn for a particular corner or a particular run of wall. As an object it does the unglamorous job every home needs doing: giving small things somewhere to live so they stop migrating onto the kitchen counter. Keys, cables, a phone, the pile of post that gathers by the front door. A shelf earns its keep by being exactly where you were already going to put something down, which is why handedness is worth getting right — a shelf facing the wrong way is a shelf you quietly stop using. A single-file organiser, and one of those pieces worth making a second time once the first has proved itself.
