Modular drawer systems always leave an awkward remainder. Trays come in fixed widths, drawers do not, and there is usually a strip of empty space along one edge once everything has been laid in. This is the filler element of such a system, a plain spacer with no purpose beyond occupying that leftover strip. There is nothing decorative about it and that is rather the point. It is the unglamorous component that makes a sorted drawer look deliberate instead of improvised, and it is modest enough that most people run off a few whenever a new drawer gets tackled. Kitchen utensils, desk stationery, workshop fasteners, the bedside drawer of miscellaneous things. Anywhere a gridded set of trays is already in use, a spacer or two is usually what finishes the layout off.
