A pocket cathedral: the ancient church of Hagia Irene, dome, buttresses and all. This grey study model captures the Byzantine basilica in Istanbul as a compact, boxy structure - a long rectangular nave lined with tall arched windows, stepped and buttressed side walls, a projecting apse at one end and, rising from the centre, a low drum ringed with slit windows and capped by a shallow ribbed dome. The stonework is suggested with a subtle coursed-brick texture down the flanks, and the massing steps back in believable architectural layers rather than being a flat facade. It is ideal as an architectural display piece, a history or classroom model, or a centrepiece building for a diorama or model-railway townscape. Collectors of world-landmark miniatures will find it slots neatly alongside other scale monuments. Print notes • Print with the base flat on the bed; the dome is a gentle enough curve to bridge with minimal or no supports. • 0.12mm layers keep the window tracery and arch mullions crisp. • For the finest windows, slow the outer-wall perimeters and cool well to avoid stringing. • Prime grey and dry-brush a pale limestone tone over the brick texture to make the coursing pop, then add a thin wash in the recesses.
