Great Mosque of Djenné Mali

The world's greatest mud-brick mosque, shrunk to the tabletop. This is a scale model of the Great Mosque of Djenné in Mali, the largest adobe building on earth. It captures the signature Sudano-Sahelian silhouette: three tapering minaret towers topped with ostrich-egg-style finials, a forest of pointed pinnacles marching along every parapet, and the distinctive rows of toron, the wooden beams that bristle from the walls as permanent scaffolding for annual re-plastering. The flat roof is studded with the little domed vents that cap the prayer hall, and the whole massing reads as one solid, hand-built earthen block. It is ideal for architecture collectors, diorama builders, model-railway world-builders and educators: a striking desk piece, a wargaming objective for desert or historical tables, or a teaching model of African vernacular architecture. Print notes • Prints upright with no supports on the walls; the toron spikes and pinnacles may want light support at very small scale, so size up if you can. • FDM handles the blocky masses well; resin brings out the toron rows and roof vents for a display-grade result. • A textured matte sandstone or terracotta filament sells the adobe look instantly; otherwise prime and drybrush ochres and browns over a dark base. • Print hollow with a couple of drain holes if you go resin, and consider a two-piece split at the roofline for easier cleanup on larger prints.
