Description
Rabat's royal mausoleum stands on the Yacoub al-Mansour esplanade, sharing that vast open platform with the stump of the Hassan Tower and the ranks of broken columns left by a mosque that was never finished. The building itself is twentieth-century but resolutely traditional in manner: a compact square block raised on a terrace, ringed by arcades, crowned with a steeply tiered pyramidal roof and worked over in the horseshoe arches, carved plaster and tile mosaic of Moroccan craft. It holds the tomb of Mohammed V, the sultan who became the country's first modern king, along with those of his sons. As a single-file architectural model it suits diorama work, landmark collections and anyone building a shelf of world buildings, being a good deal more ornamental than the terraces and parish churches such collections usually run to.
