Shoulder pads are the quickest way to make a squad look like it belongs to somebody in particular. Trade the stock pads for something with its own trim profile and iconography and a rank of identical troopers becomes a distinct formation, while painters get a defined panel to put freehand or a transfer onto. The same logic applies across a kitbash: sergeants, veterans, standard-bearers and named characters all read differently once the shoulders change.
