A saya: the scabbard half of the outfit, and the part cosplayers usually leave until last and then regret leaving. This one takes its cues from the demon-hunting corps of the Taishō-era anime, whose swordsmen carry slim, distinctive blades and whose uniform is as recognisable to a convention hall as the weapons are. Scabbards matter more than people expect. In the source material the saya is as much a part of the costume as the haori and the belt, and a build that includes one reads as finished in photographs where a bare blade on its own does not. It is also the detail that separates an outfit thrown together the night before from one that has clearly been planned. One of the simpler additions to an existing cosplay build, and a natural companion for anyone putting together a demon-slayer outfit or a shelf of anime weaponry.
