Description
The beast of the old French tale is a cursed prince rather than a monster: horns, claws and a heavy animal frame carried about in the ruined finery of a nobleman, stalking the corridors of a castle nobody visits any more. That contradiction is what makes him worth sculpting. He has to look genuinely dangerous and genuinely miserable at the same time, with menace in the bulk of him and something still recognisably human in the way he holds himself. Storybook subjects like this reward a patient painter, because the fur, the tailoring and the ruin behind them all ask for different treatments. A single-file display piece for a shelf or a cabinet, aimed at collectors of fairy-tale characters and anyone who prefers those stories closer to the versions told before they were softened.
