Description
Carp have carried the same meaning in East Asian art for centuries, persistence and the fish that swims upstream, and they lend themselves to lighting better than most motifs because a koi is really a silhouette in motion. Held flat against a wall with a bulb behind it, the body becomes a sweep of fins and trailing tail. This is a sconce rather than a table piece. It belongs where a standing lamp has nowhere to go: a hallway, the turn of a stairwell, the space above a bedhead, or an alcove that needs something other than the ceiling light. It earns its keep in daylight too, reading as wall sculpture until the switch goes on. A sensible pick for a Japanese-influenced interior, a fishkeeper's landing, or anyone who wants a light fitting with an actual subject to it.
