French for the straight wall, and that is precisely the subject: a level run of fortress curtain wall, the kind that stretches between towers on a castle's outer defences. Crenellated parapet, wall-walk behind it, coursed stonework carrying the load, and none of the ceremony that gatehouses get. Straight runs are the connective tissue of any fortification. Towers and barbicans take the attention, but it is the plain wall that turns a handful of features into an enclosure, defines the ground a siege is fought over, and gives attackers something to put ladders against.
