Edwige is the French name for the snowy owl who carries the post in the Harry Potter books, and here she is rendered as the base of a lamp — perched, wings folded, head turned with that alert and faintly imperious look owls do so well. As a lamp base it does a plinth's job while being the thing you actually look at. It works on a bedside table in a child's room, on a study desk, or on a shelf among other wizarding pieces where a plain turned column would look apologetic. The feathering and the heavy, rounded set of the body give a painter plenty to work with, though it stands up perfectly well left as it comes.
