Description
Two old ideas meet in this one. The pineapple has been a decorative motif in British homes since gardeners first coaxed one into fruiting under glass and it became shorthand for hospitality. The lithophane goes back to the 1820s: an image worked into a panel as varying thickness, so that it stays half-hidden until light passes behind it. Unlit, the thing on the side table is a piece of sculpture — the crosshatched rind, the stiff crown of leaves, the tapering body nobody needs told the name of. With a light behind it, the depth of the surface starts doing the work and the fruit's texture reads far more sharply than a flat picture of it ever would. It sits in the same family of objects as a bar lamp or a bedside glow: something you notice after dark rather than something meant to light a room.
