Description
The French term for a drawbridge names exactly what this depicts: the hinged span that drops across a moat and hauls back flat against the gatehouse wall, chains running up to the winch above. It is one of the defining images of medieval fortification, and one of the few pieces of castle architecture that is genuinely mechanical rather than just massive. As an object it sits between architectural model and scenery. Collectors of castles and siege subjects will recognise the form on sight; diorama builders and wargamers will see a gate feature to build a scene around, whether the setting is a historical keep or a fantasy stronghold. It comes as a multi-part model, and works as a standalone shelf piece as readily as it does dropped into a larger board or display base.
