A bare bulb is unforgiving. A shade is what turns it into light you can sit under, and this is the third design in a shade series doing exactly that straightforward job, breaking up glare and spreading it more evenly across a room. Lighting is one of the genuinely useful things to make at home. Shop-bought shades come in a narrow range of shapes and a narrower range of prices, and making your own means the fitting can answer to the room rather than the room putting up with whatever was in stock. It is the cheapest way to change the character of a corner without touching the walls. It suits a hallway pendant, a bedside lamp or a reading nook where the light currently sits too sharp, and it is a way to bring a set of mismatched lamps into line with one another.
