Sortie Haut

A sortie gate is the small, guarded opening a garrison uses to leave a castle without swinging the main gates wide, a postern cut into the curtain wall for raiding parties, runners and messengers. This piece takes the raised version of that arrangement: an upper exit reached by steps, set high enough in the stonework that anyone coming out is already above the ground outside. As a subject it is almost entirely texture. Coursed masonry, an arched head over the opening, and the worn, functional character of a working military door rather than a ceremonial one. That makes it useful well beyond its own footprint, whether as a display shelf piece of medieval architecture, a section of diorama, or a scenic backdrop for busts and figures already in a collection.
