Strut Central Lamp

The structure is the ornament here. A central strut runs up through the middle of the lamp and the shade hangs off it rather than hiding it, which is a piece of mid-century thinking: show the frame, let the geometry of the strut do the decorating, and keep everything else quiet. By day it reads as a sculptural object on a sideboard or a desk, upright and largely negative space. After dark it changes character completely, the strut drawing a hard line down the centre of the shade while everything around it goes soft. That contrast between the daytime object and the night-time one is the entire point of the design. A single-file print for anyone furnishing a room from the printer rather than the high street, whether that is a hallway table, the corner of a home office, or the shelf beside a bed that never got a light of its own.
