Description

A neoclassical victory medal caught mid-gallop. This circular bas-relief shows a winged Victory riding a two-horse chariot, one arm raised to crown the scene with a laurel-and-palm branch while the horses rear against streaming drapery. A beaded rim frames the composition, and Latin lettering arcs top and bottom — DE · SARDIS · AD · NOVARAM above, DIE · XXIII · MARTII · MDCCCXLIX below — dating the piece to 23 March 1849. The spoked chariot wheel and the horses' overlapping legs push real depth toward the foreground. Handsome as a standalone wall medallion, an inset for a plaque or trophy base, or a centrepiece for anyone drawn to classical and numismatic motifs. Carve / print notes • Deep undercuts around the wings and horse legs reward a two-stage CNC pass: a roughing bit, then a 1–2 mm ball-nose for the finish. • On FDM, print face-up and slow the outer walls so the raised lettering stays legible. • A round disc blank of lime, cherry or MDF suits it; sand the raised field lightly and leave the recesses darker for contrast. • Scale to roughly 120–200 mm across so the inscription reads cleanly.
