Barley-Twist Turned Baluster Spindle

A slender turned spindle with a rope-twist heart. This is a lathe-style baluster: square pommel blocks top and bottom, then a pair of urn-shaped bulbs carved with lifted leaf flutes, and between them a bold barley-twist section where the timber appears wound like a cord. The transitions are marked by crisp bead-and-cove rings, giving the column a clear, classical rhythm from end to end. It is the kind of part that populates staircases, bed frames, chair backs, table legs and porch rails — anywhere a run of matching turned uprights is needed. Because the profile is fully modelled in the round, you can cut a whole set to identical dimensions. Print notes: • Best produced on a CNC lathe or a router with a 4th-axis rotary attachment; the barley twist needs rotational machining to come out clean. • In hardwood, rough with a spiral bit and finish with a fine ball-nose for the leaf flutes and twist grooves. • For a 3D print, stand it vertically and it prints with almost no support; add a brim for bed adhesion given the small square footprint. • Sand the twist with the grain and finish in oil or a clear lacquer; the flutes take a stain wash nicely to add depth.
