Baroque Acanthus Scroll Volute Onlay

Curling up out of a cluster of layered leaves, this is a full baroque acanthus scroll, a rococo flourish with a tall S-curve volute rising at the top and smaller answering scrolls tucked around the base. It's the kind of ornament that sits beautifully as an onlay on a cabinet door, a mirror crown or the headboard of a bed. Cut it in a close-grained hardwood like maple or lime so the fine leaf edges hold their shape; a ball-nose bit will follow the rounded flutes and hollows without chatter, and a v-bit pass sharpens the deepest recesses. Printing it instead? Lay it face-up, slice at a fine layer height, and a coat of primer sanded back melts the layer lines into that soft, hand-carved look.
