Oval Scalloped Petal Rosette

A plump carved rosette, oval rather than round, with a ring of deep scalloped petals radiating from a proud domed centre boss. The petals are gouged as long tapering flutes, so raked light throws a lovely fan of shadow across the piece — especially effective against a dark stained ground. Use it as a furniture centrepiece, a newel-post cap detail, or a repeating rhythm along a frieze. Machine it with a ballnose for the smooth petal valleys, then a fine tapered ballnose to sharpen the crease where each petal meets its neighbour. The domed hub wants a light finishing pass to stay perfectly smooth. In lime or beech it takes a wax beautifully; give the whole boss a gentle hand-sand before finishing.
