Gothic Tracery Openwork Roundel

A carved ring of scrolls and buds you can actually see straight through. This is an openwork medallion — a circular fretwork panel where the pattern is cut all the way through, so the design floats against whatever sits behind it. The outer band carries a ring of plump, lobed leaf-and-bud motifs marching around the rim, while the inner field spins a set of paired C-scrolls and pointed vesica shapes into a six-fold rosette. The carving is rounded and generous rather than sharp, each curl swelling in the middle and tapering at the ends, so light rolls across the surface as you move around it. It is made to be seen on a wall or a door: a decorative roundel over a bed or fireplace, a ceiling-rose accent, an inset panel for a cabinet door, or a standalone hanging ornament. Because it is pierced, it also looks striking backlit or mounted over a contrasting colour. Print notes: • On a CNC machine this is a cut-through job — rough with a compression bit, then finish the profile so the negative spaces stay clean; leave tabs to hold the piece until the final pass. • For 3D printing, lay it flat, decorated face up; the through-cuts print as clean voids with no supports. • Keep the material reasonably thick (8–15 mm equivalent) so the thin scroll bridges don't turn fragile. • Sand the front face lightly before finishing; a wax or dark glaze worked into the recesses makes the relief pop.
