Description

A shield-shaped dish with soft scalloped shoulders and a deep, calm well. This piece is a curved, coffin-or-crest silhouette carved as a shallow tray: a broad rounded top that tapers to a pointed base, framed by a smooth raised lip with gentle scalloped notches at the shoulders, sinking to a wide dished hollow in the middle. There is no fussy ornament here — the appeal is the sculpted flow of the border and the way the recessed basin catches light down its length. That makes it a versatile catch-all: a valet tray for keys and coins by the door, a ring and trinket dish on a dresser, an incense or soap rest, or a decorative wall boss with a heraldic, gothic feel. CNC / print notes • On a router this is a straightforward pocketing job: rough the well with a flat end mill, then finish the sweeping walls and lip with a ballnose for that smooth dished gradient. • In wood, a lighter species (maple, sycamore, ash) shows the flowing form and takes an oil finish cleanly; seal well if it will hold keys or damp soap. • 3D printing it works too — print the tray face-up with light supports only under any overhanging lip, and sand the basin before finishing. • Scale small for jewellery, or large for an entryway catch-all; a food-safe finish is only needed if you intend to serve on it.
