Description

Gothic tracery folded into a pocket-sized rose window. Four interlocking circles overlap at the centre of this round relief to form a crisp four-petal flower — a classic quatrefoil — with a second smaller blossom blooming right at the core. The banded rings weave over and under one another like stone tracery, and the whole medallion is ringed by a raised outer border of alternating petal and bead motifs. Deep undercuts and open cut-throughs give it genuine dimensional shadow rather than a flat engraved look. Think church-window elegance for furniture and joinery: it suits a wardrobe panel, a stair newel cap, a clock surround or a decorative rosette where two mouldings meet. The pierced sections also make it a fine fretwork insert with a light or a coloured backing showing through. Print notes • On the CNC, rough with a larger end mill then finish the interlaced rings and petal border with a fine ball-nose to keep the crossings sharp. • A closed-grain wood such as maple or beech holds those thin overlapping bands far better than softwood. • Printing instead? Lay it flat, border side up, and it needs no supports — the through-holes clear themselves. • Ease the top arris of each ring with a light sand so the woven pattern reads clearly, then oil to deepen the contrast between raised and recessed areas.
