Soviet Border Guard Badge Relief

A Soviet border-guard honour badge, rendered as a deep bas-relief. This panel recreates the ''Отличник погранвойск'' (Excellent Border Guard) award as a crisp CNC relief. At its heart, inside a pentagonal shield, a stern officer in a peaked cap is shown in profile above a fixed-bayonet rifle held upright at his shoulder. Behind the shield radiates a layered starburst of sharp faceted rays, and a tall banner rises above bearing the Soviet state emblem — hammer and sickle over a globe, framed by wheat sheaves and a star. Raised Cyrillic lettering curves down both flanks, and a small ribbon-and-emblem tab hangs beneath. It's a piece of mid-century military heraldry, clearly meant for collectors of historical insignia and commemorative wall plaques. Great for CNC carvers producing display medallions, re-enactment and militaria décor, or a framed relief for someone drawn to Cold-War-era history. Print notes • The layered rays and fine lettering want a tapered ball-nose finishing pass at a tight stepover; use a small bit to clean the letter serifs and the emblem detailing. • Machine in a close-grained hardwood or dense modelling board so the sharp star points don't chip; back off feed on the thin ray tips. • 3D printing works too — print flat, face up, at a fine layer height to keep the profile portrait readable; supports aren't needed for a flat-backed relief. • Finish with a bronze or pewter paint and a dark wash to pop the recesses.
