Description

A proud lion at the helm, framed by the ship's wheel. This relief carving centres on a lion's head rendered in deep, confident detail: heavy brow, broad muzzle, and a mane sculpted as thick twisted ropes that tumble down like a mariner's rigging or a set of dreadlocks. The great cat sits inside a classic ship's steering wheel, its turned spokes and knobbed handles radiating out to form a natural circular border, while draped folds beneath suggest robed shoulders. The layered depth, high on the muzzle and rope coils, deep in the wheel's open rim, gives it real presence under raking light. It is a statement piece for anyone with a nautical or big-cat theme: think coastal pubs, man-caves, boat clubs, a study wall, or a carved sign hung over a doorway. Cut notes • Suits a 3-axis router; rough with a 1/4" end mill, then finish the mane rope and facial detail with a tapered ball-nose (1-2 mm) for clean coils. • Hardwoods like oak, walnut or sapele hold the fine rope texture; a tight grain such as maple keeps the muzzle crisp. • Watch tool reach in the deep pockets between the wheel and the mane; a longer bit avoids collet rub. • Finish with Danish oil to pop the grain, or paint and sand back for a two-tone antique look, and add a keyhole slot on the back for hanging.
