Frida Kahlo Jungle Portrait Panel

A tribute portrait that blooms with jungle life. This deep-relief wall panel frames a calm, wide-cheeked woman's face, plainly a homage to Frida Kahlo, beneath a floral headdress and a canopy of oversized tropical leaves. She is not alone: a wide-eyed spider monkey peers over one shoulder, a watchful cat presses in on the other, and across her collar a hummingbird spreads its wings amid a tangle of thorny vines that echo Kahlo's most famous self-portrait. It is a statement piece for a reading nook, a studio or a gallery wall, and it rewards a raking light that throws the layered leaves and feathers into deep shadow. Carve it on a router with a ball-nose finishing bit for the smooth facial modelling, then switch to a fine tapered bit to pick out the vines and feather detail. • In hardwood, quarter-sawn stock keeps the face from tearing out; leave a border for clamping and later framing. • Printing it instead? Orient the panel face-up and flat with no supports, and run slow (0.08-0.12mm) so the eyes, lips and hummingbird read cleanly. • A dark wax or stain wiped back into the recesses makes the whole scene pop off its background.
