Celestial Sun And Moon Relief

Two faces of the sky, carved into a single disc. This deep-relief roundel pairs a waning crescent moon with a radiant sun, the two meeting cheek to cheek across the centre. The moon carries the old folk 'man in the moon' face - a bearded elder with heavy-lidded, dreaming eyes and long hair that curls down into the lunar rim - while a loose trail of five-point stars drifts across the open field between them. Opposite, a serene feminine sun bows her head, her hair streaming outward into long, licking flame-rays that break past the circular border. It is a romantic piece of folk astronomy that hangs as one sculptural statement rather than a busy repeating pattern. As a relief it suits a panel above a headboard, a fireplace plaque, or a weatherproofed medallion on a garden wall. On the router it likes a close-grained hardwood or dense MDF, where the star points and fine hair strands stay sharp. Print notes • Carve or print face-up as a flat relief so no supports are needed in that orientation. • Hog out the background with a larger bit, then switch to a fine tapered ball-nose for the faces, stars and flame-rays. • In FDM a 0.16-0.2 mm layer keeps the hair grooves legible; a light sand and a warm wax or bronze rub afterwards deepens the shadows and lifts the two faces.
