Moonlit Fur-Clad Couple Relief

Two fur-clad wanderers stride through moonlit grass beneath a slender crescent. This deep-relief scene shows a primeval couple moving together across wild ground. In front, a powerfully built man in a ragged fur loincloth and a soft cap leans into his stride, a short blade tucked at his hip; behind and slightly higher walks a woman in matching furs, her long hair loose. Tall carved grass sweeps along the base, a broken branch juts from the left, and a thin crescent moon hangs in the top corner to set the night-time mood. The modelling is muscular and sculptural, far closer to fine-art figure carving than to cartooning. Cut notes • This is a high, layered relief, so hog out the deep background first, then step down to the figures and finish the anatomy with a fine tapered ballnose. • Choose a dense, even hardwood so the sinew, hair and grass blades survive fine passes without tear-out. • Run the figures roughly with the grain and slow the feed on the raised limbs, which are the most fragile parts. • A dark stain wiped into the recesses and buffed back off the highlights makes the moonlit depth pop.
