Description

A solemn hooded face staring out from beneath a heavy cowl. This carving depicts the head of a robed figure, a monk, pilgrim or medieval penitent, with the hood drawn close around the skull and gathered in soft folds down the neck. The features are strongly modelled: a furrowed brow, wide deep-set eyes, a broad nose and full, slightly parted lips give the face a haunted, watchful presence. It is a portrait study with real weight, equal parts devotional and unsettling. The form works beautifully as a carved bust or a high-relief wall plaque. Cabinetmakers can set it into a panel or door; woodcarvers can take it full-round as a mantel or newel ornament; it also 3D-prints cleanly as a standalone head for painting. Cut & print notes • For CNC, rough with a ball-nose then finish with a fine tapered bit; a 4-axis or rotary setup captures the deep hood undercuts far better than 3-axis alone. • Lime, tulipwood or a tight-grained hardwood holds the eye and lip detail without tear-out. • If 3D printing, orient the face upward at a slight tilt and support under the chin and hood overhang. • A dark wax or gel stain wiped back across the recesses pops the brow and eye sockets and gives the piece its brooding, aged look.
