Description

A slim ribbon of carved scrollwork that lifts a plain drawer front out of the ordinary. This onlay runs wide and low, its ends tapering into softly rounded caps and its whole body given a gentle bow so it settles neatly onto a curved rail or apron. A thin raised border frames the field, and at the heart sits a symmetrical flourish: a small beaded fleuron flanked by mirror-image acanthus scrolls that sweep outward and coil into tight snail-curls, each resting over a little carved bead. The relief is deliberately shallow, so the piece reads as elegant detailing rather than a heavy centrepiece. It suits drawer faces, cabinet rails, headboard crests and mantel aprons, and the curved profile is a gift if you are dressing a bombe front or a bowed apron where a flat appliqué would never sit right. Print notes: • Machine in a close-grained hardwood such as beech, maple or tulipwood so the fine scroll tips hold their edge; MDF works for a painted finish. • Rough with a 6mm end mill, then finish the beads and curls with a 2mm tapered ball-nose for clean fillets. • Keep the long grain running end-to-end along the arch to stop the slender tips from chipping out. • Sand the raised border by hand before gluing, then bed the onlay on the workpiece with a thin PVA line and light clamping.
