Palmette and Scroll Center Onlay

Symmetry does the work here: a central fluted tulip bud sits on a slim turned-baluster stem, and from its base two mirrored acanthus scrolls sweep upward and outward like a pair of opening wings. Each scroll gathers into a tight inner volute, then throws off a feathered leaf that flicks up at the tip, giving the piece a wide, low, crest-like spread that is broader than it is tall. Below the stem the leaves gather into a small drop, so the ornament has a clear top-and-tail even though it is emphatically horizontal. It is a centrepiece appliqué: set it at the top rail of a cabinet or wardrobe door, the crest of a headboard, the crown of a mirror, or centred above a doorway. The open, airy layout means it decorates without crowding whatever sits beneath it. Cutting & print notes • Bilateral symmetry makes layout easy — the vertical centreline is your registration reference. • The back is flat for onlay mounting; the raised centre carries the deepest relief, tapering to thin, fragile leaf tips, so handle it gently after routing. • A 3-axis CNC with a fine ball-nose finishing pass captures the scroll eyes and flutes; add a V-bit pass to sharpen the tulip's ribs. • Sand the high surfaces, leave the recesses slightly rough for glaze to catch, then gild, paint or lime-wax. A refined, restrained crest for traditional furniture and mirror work.
