Description

A winged lion caught mid-stride, mane bristling and pinion sweeping skyward. This relief carves the classic heraldic beast in profile — a lean, muscular lion with one forepaw advanced, a deep shaggy mane worked in overlapping tufts, and a great feathered wing rising from the shoulder to curl into a tight scroll at the tip. The long tail loops back on itself in an elegant S that balances the upswept wing. Every plane is modelled for raked light: soft across the flank, crisp through the mane and the layered flight feathers. This is a decorative appliqué meant to be read from the side — glue it to a cabinet door, a headboard, a fireplace surround, a gate post or a heraldic wall plaque. It carries strong Venetian Lion of St Mark energy and pairs naturally as a mirrored left/right set on either side of a doorway or crest. Cut notes: • Carve in a fine hardwood so the feather layers and mane strands hold their edges; walnut and cherry glow under oil. • This is a raised relief, not a full round — follow a flat roughing bit with a tapered ball-nose finishing pass. • The undercut where the wing scrolls back may need a smaller tool or a V-bit clean-up to sharpen the shadow line. • Sand with the grain along the body, keep the mane crisp, then finish with oil or a dark wax to deepen the recesses.
