Description

A classical spray of acanthus, unfurling in mirror-image scrolls around a central feathered plume. This decorative onlay is pure ornament: a tall central leaf-tongue flanked by pairs of C-scrolls that curl outward at the crown and tuck back into tight volutes at the foot. The relief is generous and rounded, with crisp channels running the length of each leaf so light rakes across the carving and throws soft shadows. It is the kind of flourish you would find crowning a cabinet door or an old mirror frame. Cabinetmakers and restorers use appliqués like this to dress door panels, drawer fronts, headboards, mantels and pilaster tops — anywhere a plain surface wants a focal accent. Print notes: • Carve as a raised relief on a flat backer: a V-bit or tapered ballnose handles the fine leaf grooves, with a larger tool for the roughing pass. • Basswood, tulipwood or a tight-grained hardwood machines cleanest; MDF works for a painted finish. • On a 3D printer, lay it face-up and flat — no supports needed — then sand the top before priming. • Glue to a prepared surface, fill the seam with a thin bead of wood filler, and finish to match the host piece for a carved-in-place look.
