Baroque Acanthus Vertical Drop Onlay

A slender cascade of leaf-scroll that pours down a stile like carved water. This tall vertical onlay is a mirrored study in movement. It opens at the top with a scrolled cap and a run of beaded dots, narrows to a slim waist cinched by a carved ribbon band, then blooms outward into two symmetrical sprays of acanthus foliage that tumble and curl the whole way down. At the base the leaves gather into a paired heart-scroll finial, giving the drop a clear beginning and end. The relief is genuinely high — leaves lift and undercut, tips roll over on themselves — so shadows pool between the fronds and the whole thing reads as sculpture rather than pattern. It is sized and shaped for uprights: the face of a turned or square table leg, a pilaster, a door stile, the side rails of a tall mirror, or the vertical panels of a wardrobe. Because it is perfectly symmetrical top-to-bottom on its centre line, you can mirror it to make a matched left/right pair for flanking a doorway or headboard. Print / carve notes • Deep, undercut relief — on a router use a steep tapered ball bit and expect a slow finishing pass to reach into the recesses. • For resin or FDM, lay it flat on its flat back face; the front detail then needs no supports. • Duplicate and mirror before carving if you want a symmetrical pair. • Break the fuzz off the leaf tips with fine paper; they sharpen up dramatically under stain, wax or gilt.
