Description

A rococo flourish for the top of a cabinet — shell at the heart, scrolls thrown wide. This carved onlay is built around a central cartouche: a fluted scallop shell rises from a nest of tightly coiled C-scrolls and curling acanthus leaves, mirrored perfectly to either side. From that raised medallion two slender moulded arms sweep down and outward in a gentle, wing-like arc, each finishing in a small rolled volute — the classic silhouette of a crest or pediment made to crown a doorway, mirror, headboard or armoire. Cabinetmakers and furniture restorers reach for pieces like this to add a period focal point without hand-carving from scratch; it also earns its keep above an interior door or as the centrepiece of a decorative wall panel. Cut & finish notes • A V-bit plus a tapered ball-nose gets you into the tight scroll recesses; save the shell flutes for a fine finishing pass. • Machine on flat stock — this is a low-relief appliqué meant to be glued onto a surface, not stand free. • Sand the raised medallion first, then clean the backgrounds with detail files before staining. • Handsome in oak or tulipwood for staining, or MDF if it's heading straight under paint or gilding.
