Norse Lashed-Timber Portal Surround

A doorway that looks dragged from a longhouse. This is a three-sided portal surround — two tall uprights joined by a lintel, open at the base — carved to look like rugged timbers bound together. Each length is textured as a gnarled beam wrapped in twisting rope or vine, cinched at intervals with bold X-shaped cross-lashings and studded with knot-holes. The effect is rough, weathered and thoroughly hand-hewn: Norse, Viking-hall, or high-fantasy in flavour. It is made to frame something — a mirror, a real doorway, a wall-mounted sign, a portrait — or to serve as scenery for tabletop gaming and dioramas. At model scale it reads as a dungeon gate; at full scale, as a statement piece of rustic decor. Cut notes • The frame is symmetrical side-to-side, so you can carve one upright, mirror it, and cut the lintel as a matching run. • Keep the texture deep and slightly irregular — over-sanding kills the weathered, lashed-timber character. • A V-bit lays in the rope grooves and X-lashings; a ball-nose rounds the beam bellies between them. • For a larger portal, split it into tiling sections and register them with dowels; stain dark, then dry-brush a lighter tone over the raised rope to make the binding stand out.
