Description

A cresting wave of scrollwork, coiled into a single hypnotic medallion. This CNC relief spirals a set of nested koru-style curls inward, each scroll chasing the next around a shallow dished disc until they nest at the centre like the inside of a nautilus. The flowing, ribbon-like ridges rise and fall across the surface, so raking light turns the whole piece into a play of soft shadows and warm highlights — very Art-Nouveau-meets-Māori-spiral in feel. Unlike a rigid geometric lattice, this is all movement: swirling volutes, teardrop hollows and a rolling sense of a wave about to break. That makes it a striking round appliqué for a cabinet door, a headboard boss, a wall roundel, or a feature carving above a fireplace. Left as a routed hardwood piece it's tactile and organic; cast or painted it passes for aged bronze. CNC notes • The deep scroll valleys reward a two-stage cut: a roughing pass to clear the dished ground, then a tapered ball-nose finishing pass to smooth the rolling ridges. • Keep an eye on the tight central curls — step down feed rate there so the tool doesn't chatter in the narrow pockets. • Grain direction matters: orient the swirl so the sweeping curves run with the grain where possible to reduce tear-out. • Finish with oil and wax on timber for depth, or prime-and-bronze for the metallic look in the render. Scales down nicely as a printed pendant or drawer-pull too.
