Heart-Crest Acanthus Scroll Onlay

A sweeping horizontal flourish of carved scrollwork, ready to crown a cabinet or mirror. This decorative onlay is a symmetrical spray of baroque acanthus scrolls: a small heart-shaped teardrop sits at the crest of the centre, from which paired C-scrolls unfurl outward, curling into tight spirals before tapering away to slender leaf tips at each end. The relief is gently domed, catching light along the raised curls and sinking into shadow between them, so the piece looks hand-carved rather than machined. It is designed to be applied, not framed - glue or pin it to the top rail of a cabinet door, a headboard, a mirror surround, a clock case or the apron of a bespoke table to add instant old-world elegance. The long, low proportion makes it ideal for pediments and horizontal rails. Print notes • Ideal for CNC routing in a close-grained hardwood such as beech, cherry or tulipwood; a fine-grained MDF also carves cleanly for a painted finish. • Rough out with a flat end mill, then run a tapered ball-nose finishing pass to round the scrolls and clean the tight spiral pockets. • The design is symmetrical, so it can be mirrored left-to-right to pair over matching doors. • As a 3D print it makes a fine appliqué too - print face-up flat on the bed with no supports, then sand and prime for painting or gilding. Finish with a wax or a gilt cream and the recesses hold just enough shadow to make the scrolls read from across a room.
