Rococo Shell Fireplace Surround

A little Louis XV chimneypiece in miniature, all shell and scroll and cabriole curve. The model reproduces a full fireplace surround: a serpentine shelf top rides over a shaped frieze whose centre is crowned by a fluted scallop shell flanked by sweeping acanthus sprays. From there the jambs fall away as elegant S-curved cabriole legs, each carved with a rolled volute at the knee and a foliate scroll at the foot, framing a plain recessed firebox opening. It is a display-and-build piece — print or cut it at full scale as a decorative mantel for a faux or electric fireplace, or shrink it down as an ornate mirror frame, a doll's-house chimneypiece, or a dramatic shadow-box surround for a picture. Print / cut notes: • The central shell cartouche and knee volutes carry the finest detail — machine them with a small ball-nose finishing pass, or resin-print for the crispest scallop flutes. • The flat rear face sits flush to a wall; the model prints face-up with the back on the bed, no supports required. • At furniture scale, cut the two legs and the frieze as separate components and join, so grain runs vertically on the jambs and horizontally on the top for strength. • Fill and prime before painting — a chalk-white or aged-stone finish suits the period, and a soft glaze in the recesses lifts the carving.
