Rococo Cresting Palmette Onlay

A wide Rococo flourish sized to crown a cabinet, door or mantel. This is a long horizontal onlay carved in shallow relief. A slim raised border frames the panel, and at its centre a fan of acanthus fronds and a curling palmette rises like a plume. From that heart, mirror-image C-scrolls sweep left and right, each carrying a fine laurel sprig strung with little berries, before the lower edge dips into a soft, valance-like scallop and rolls into tight volutes at both ends. A small pendant bloom hangs beneath the middle like a decorative keystone. The effect is unmistakably French provincial cresting, the kind of ornament that lifts a plain wardrobe door, a headboard rail, an over-mantel or a mirror surround into something with real period character. Because the composition is symmetrical and low, it suits a wide, shallow workpiece and reads beautifully once oiled or gilded. Cutting notes • Machine as a single-sided bas-relief; a 1/8" or 1/4" ballnose finishing pass keeps the scroll edges crisp. • Hardwoods with a tight grain (beech, maple, cherry) hold the fine laurel detail far better than softwoods. • Leave a little stock around the rolled ends and clean them with a small V-bit or by hand to avoid tear-out. • Sand lightly, then a coat of Danish oil or a rub of gilt cream in the recesses really shows off the depth. Equally happy printed in resin as an appliqué, then glued and painted to match existing joinery.
