Description

A wide, wing-like cresting crowned by a fluted shell. The centrepiece is a scalloped fan — a stack of rounded, petal-like flutes radiating from a small scrolled roll at the top — that spreads into two long, tapering leaf-scrolls sweeping horizontally to left and right before hooking upward at their tips. It is a low, elongated ornament designed to run along the top of something: a cabinet cornice, an archway, a headboard rail or a mirror crest. This is the applique furniture restorers reach for to finish a piece with a flourish. Its horizontal spread makes it ideal above doors, drawers and panels where a tall motif simply would not fit. Print notes • Lay it flat on its back and print the carved side up; the relief is shallow enough to skip supports entirely. • Because it is long and thin, add a brim or a couple of extra perimeters to stop the delicate scroll tips lifting from the bed. • CNC users get a crisp fluted shell from a ball-nose finishing pass with a fine stepover; hardwood or dense MDF both carve cleanly. • Finish with gilding cream rubbed over a dark base to make the flutes pop, or paint it to match existing woodwork.
