Flower-Filled Urn Furniture Onlay

An urn spilling over with carved blooms. This onlay depicts a footed ornamental vase brimming with flowers. The vessel itself is a fluted, goblet-shaped urn with looped ring handles and a draped swag across its belly, standing on a domed oval foot. Rising from it is a symmetrical spray: two large six-petalled blossoms flank a central fan of lily-like buds, with a cluster of smaller flowers gathered at the rim. Every petal and flute is softly modelled for a rich, rounded relief. It is a decorative appliqué to be applied to a flat surface. It makes a graceful centrepiece for a headboard, a cabinet door, an over-mantel panel, or the top rail of a bed or wardrobe. Cut notes • Machine it as a raised onlay on thin stock and mount it, keeping the host panel clean behind the deep flower relief. • The blooms sit well proud of the urn — build depth by clearing the background low and finishing the petals high with a fine ball-nose. • Choose an even-grained hardwood such as lime, cherry or maple that carves crisp petal edges without splintering. • Rough with an end mill, finish with a 2–3 mm ball-nose, then hand-sand the flower faces before staining or gilding.
