Description

Mirror-image acanthus, wound into a tall centrepiece. This vertical decorative onlay is built on perfect left-right symmetry: a slim upright leaf-tip crowns the top, splitting into two out-curling volutes like tuned horns, then flowing down into a pair of tall feathered acanthus fronds that frame the sides. At the heart, four generous scrolls coil inward around a central axis, meeting a small petalled rosette, and the composition closes at the base with a hanging cluster of layered leaves and a rounded berry drop. The relief is soft and rounded rather than sharp, so it catches light in gentle gradients. Made to dress the stile of a cabinet door, a headboard, a mirror frame, a clock case or a newel post, it brings a rococo flourish to plain joinery. The elongated proportion also works run vertically down a pilaster or panel centre. Cut notes • A 3D-carve toolpath suits this best: rough with a ball-nose, then finish with a fine tapered ball-nose to hold the tight scroll centres. • The inward spirals are the deepest points and benefit from a slower finishing feed to avoid fuzz at the coil eyes. • Machine in a tight, even grain such as beech, lime or maple so the fronds stay crisp; mirror the file for a matched pair. • Prime and paint for a gilded look, or leave in timber under wax for a warm carved finish.
