Classical Urn And Acanthus Onlay

A classical urn cradled by unfurling acanthus scrolls: a centrepiece onlay with real old-world elegance. At the heart of this horizontal appliqué sits a fluted, footed vase topped with a flame-like flourish of stylised leaves. From either side, symmetrical acanthus scrollwork sweeps outward in mirrored C-curves, the leaf tips curling back on themselves and tapering to fine points at the far ends. Carved in flowing high relief, it has the confident, hand-cut character of traditional furniture ornament. Use it to dress an overdoor or door head, a cabinet front, a headboard, a mantel or the crown of a mirror frame, wherever a plain surface needs a formal focal point. CNC notes • A natural fit for a 3D relief carve: rough out the leaf mass first, then run a fine tapered ball nose for the crisp veins and scroll detail. • Machine it as an applied onlay in a paintable, close-grained wood such as basswood/lime or maple, then glue it onto the finished surface. • It is mirror-symmetric, so it centres cleanly over a door, cabinet panel or mantel with no guesswork. • Sand the raised leaf tips gently; they are the most delicate part of the carving.
